protests against directive in strasbourg on 12 february 2006

from 14 16 february 2006 plenary session of european parliament carried out first reading of directive in strasbourg. on 16 february 2006 meps (members of european parliament) voted 391-213 in favour of proposed revision directive, although had been watered down original version read european parliament on 14 february, so socialist mep evelyne gebhardt said directive had been turned upside down, claim contested labour organisations. majority of members of 2 largest groupings in parliament, conservative european people s party (epp) , centre-left party of european socialists (pes) voted in favour of revised draft. party of european left, european green party , french socialist party voted against new revision. meanwhile, 50,000 people demonstrated against country of origin principle in strasbourg.

the proposed directive have covered:

services of general public interest (public services), including, not limited to, water, sewage , waste management.
services provided businesses, such management consultancy, certification , testing, facilities management , advertising,
services provided both businesses , consumers, such real estate agencies, construction services, architects, distribution services, car rental , travel agencies.
consumer leisure services such tourism, sports centres , amusement parks.

suggested exclusions

the following, however, have been excluded:

broadcasting,
gambling
temporary employment agencies,
legal , social services,
postal , audiovisual services,
public health care (but not private health care),
public transport

the controversial country of origin principle explicitly left out, there no country of destination principle replace it. european court of justice therefore charged deciding, through jurisprudence, country s labour laws apply in each case.
