watt appointed officer of order of british empire on 1 january 1919, in recognition of war service. returned australia on 6 may rest of 1st training wing s personnel, aboard troopship kaisar-i-hind, on ranking officer. leaving afc afterwards, elected president of new south wales section of australian aero club. served senior delegate on committee of veteran military pilots examining applications appointment proposed independent australian air service. watt esteemed man did not forget old comrades, providing former afc members financial aid , helping them re-establish in civilian life. maintained interest in commercial flying refused offer take position of controller of civil aviation in 1920 owing business interests, included partnership in family shipping firm of gilchrist, watt & sanderson ltd, , directorships of mining, rubber, , art corporations. turned down invitations stand parliament, , join fledgling royal australian air force.


oswald watt drowned @ bilgola beach, near newport, new south wales, on 21 may 1921. cuts , bruising on body indicated had slipped on rocks, struck head, , rolled unconscious relatively shallow water. survived 15-year-old son, accorded military funeral 2 days later @ st jude s church, randwick. members of afc, royal air force, , australian aero club formed guard of honour @ service, 1 of largest in suburb s history, included representatives of royal australian navy , australian army. among tributes floral wreath anonymous group of french admirers, , dropped parachute low-flying plane. on 31 may, watt s body cremated , ashes interred in family vault @ st jude s.
