the creation of become teatro massimo bellini took 2 hundred years, beginning discussions following disastrous 1693 earthquake destroyed catania. construction of public theatre discussed, , foundation stone laid in 1812.


architect salvatore zahra buda began prepare plan theatre in piazza nuovaluce, in front of santa maria di nuovaluce monastery, location of present-day theatre. decided great municipal theatre worthy of expanding city should created; plan of teatro nuovaluce (new light theatre) grandiose 1 in respects, , conceived create 1 of innovative works in italy.


due funding problems, work had stop years. meanwhile, smaller theatre - provisional municipal theatre – built instead, , opened in 1822 (but destroyed during second world war). meanwhile teatro nuovaluce, after being partially completed , converted multi-purpose hall, devoted summer use until 1865 when sold privately finance construction of new theatre.


in 1870, theatre architect carlo sada appointed find suitable site new theatre. many location options considered long desired massimo theatre. 1 location chosen turned down original site being brought picture. time location large, multi-purpose hall. again, funding problems arose, , plan taken on municipality. municipal committee decided structure should made single-purpose opera house. finally, work proceeded well, , theatre completed in 7 years, opening in may 1890.


the exterior of house matches distinctive sicilian baroque style of neighboring buildings of late 17th century. marble foyer, “ridotto”, ornate , stuccoed, , statue of bellini located between central arches. beautiful red-plush interior includes main floor seating , 4 tiers of boxes. surrounding them, on upper level, unusual arched arcades. painted ceiling ernesto bellandi depicts scenes 4 of bellini’s well-known operas.
