history
formation , years (2001–2003)

the cribs formed in late 2001 recording project 3 brothers. after recording demo , garnering label interest, band started playing live around time, @ venues brudenell social club in leeds, , squats , warehouse parties artists such calvin johnston, subway sect, herman dune, , ballboy. released split 7 single on leeds based garage/riot grrrl/punk label squirrel records during period former shove/boyskout member jen schande. limited 300 copies on blue vinyl record rarity sells upwards of $150 on ebay. according mojo magazine, on strength of 1 demo, rush find uk strokes saw three-piece fielding calls major labels, pluggers , label managers in 2002. after several high-profile support slots, band signed fledgling independent label wichita recordings in 2003 thought (they) great because sounded bit pavement , had big hook. went see them @ metro on oxford street , fell in love them. seemed such obvious pop band. every song sounded single - mark bowen, wichita recordings.

the cribs (2004)

after signing wichita recordings, band began re-recording many of songs original demo, several new tracks debut record. sessions began in london chicago based avant-garde musician bobby conn producing, after band had supported him on uk dates , impressed him had cassette demo had recorded on boom-box, suggested overdubs, kitchen-sink overdubs. tried handclaps, not sure handclaps . keep real - bobby conn. sessions moved toe rag studios in hackney band self-producing. album completed in 7 days, live 8-track tape, ed deegan engineering.

released on 8 march 2004, album found supporters in nme, commented on supreme pop melodies , , referred lo-fi, hi fun giving 8/10 review. lo-fi term follow band around next few years, , became synonymous group. again, nme in 2011: recorded in week, s definition of indie lo-fi. not willful indie lo-fi; scratches, clangs , gawwumps heard here genuinely product of trio s shoestring methods rather usual contrived fuzz bands spend ages poring on beaten eight-tracks achieve . radio 1 dj steve lamacq champion. lois wilson of mojo magazine described album in 2009 intelligent lyrics on background of clipped guitars , tumbling drums, nods strokes, beat happening, , c86 s inept charm 3 singles released album – limited edition 7 number / baby don’t sweat in november 2003, followed first single proper 1 , climbed no. 2 in indie charts. me third , final single album, again making indie top 10. cribs toured extensively throughout 2004 , 2005, both headliners supporting artists old friend bobby conn, death cab cutie , libertines. on campaign toured uk , ireland, europe, japan, , united states, several significant international festival appearances such reading , leeds festivals, summersonic, t in park , pukkelpop amongst others. though moderate underground success @ time number has gone on become 1 of band s enduring ‘hits’ – seldom being left off set-list , accompanied full crowd sing-along of signature, repeated guitar riff.

the new fellas (2005–2006)

after concluding touring duties first record, band taken off road start writing follow up. however, cribs decided still wanted tour , took posting phone numbers , email addresses on internet, professing play anywhere fuel money , crate of beer. diy approach band , label feel key factor in success, helped nurture strong, passionate fanbase.

the new fellas, band s second album release, recorded edwyn collins, singer-songwriter , guitarist glasgow s influential orange juice in london @ own west heath studios. again, comparatively unpolished record sonically, both producer collins , band achieving sounds similar heard on orange juice records. was, however, intention , reason band , producer put together. had definite ideas wanted record sound like…they had work ethic, there nothing spoiled them - proper indie; done on shoe-string , got on it….they tremendous - edwyn collins. 1 song, haunted , recorded on scarborough beach on whim, after hearing steve martin ukulele duet recorded on beach.

the first release record single hey scenesters! on 18 april 2005. reached no. 27 in uk charts, , started run of 7 consecutive top 40 singles. album followed on 20 june 2005 although had leaked onto internet several months prior official release date, hampering first week sales. record has however, gone on certified silver bpi, , in recent poll held nme proved overall fans favourite record. other singles released record mirror kissers , martell , , non album track re gonna lose (produced bernard butler), paired wrong way aa side. extensive new fellas world tour took in several uk tours, europe, united states, canada, japan, australia, scandinavia, , first trip iceland. appeared @ numerous festivals @ time, including appearance on main stage @ reading , leeds festivals (becoming first band ever progress through 3 stages in consecutive years), headlining tent @ t in park, fuji rock festival in japan extensive usa arena tour death cab cutie , franz ferdinand. european tour during period ex pavement man stephen malkmus , jicks introduce gary future wife joanna bolme.

shortly before appearance @ fuji rock festival, cribs released japan-only mini album called arigato cockers, made of b-sides , rarities both first , second albums.

in year-end issue, nme made new fellas no. 11 album of year, , hey scenesters single of year.

men s needs, women s needs, whatever (2007–2008)

at conclusion of new fellas campaign, cribs signed major label deal warner bros. records – though remained on wichita in uk @ bands insistence. subsequent album, men s needs, women s needs, whatever saw band take steps progress forth lo-fi roots, being recorded in vancouver, bc, canada alex kapranos of franz ferdinand producer. band , producer had met during tour bands did death cab cutie, , hit off immediately. album mixed andy wallace (nirvana, foo fighters). collaborated lee ranaldo of sonic youth on track safe – ranaldo contributing spoken word poetry band s music.

prior records release cribs took in run of small uk club dates preview songs new record. documented in first cribs documentary leave neat. first cut album single men s needs , released on 7 may. proved band s first breakthrough mainstream radio , reached no. 17 in uk charts, becoming biggest hit date. accompanying video, filmed in hollywood director diane martel has achieved on 7 million youtube views date.

the album released on 21 may 2007, , entered uk album charts @ no. 13.

touring began @ royal albert hall in london on 30 march teenage cancer trust. rest of 2007 , of 2008 spent on road promoting record, taking in extensive uk , european touring, several united states , canada tours, japan, , band s first trip out mexico main stage appearance @ mx beat festival, later headline shows. during touring schedules appeared on late night conan o brien, late show david letterman, , late late show craig ferguson.

the second single released record moving pictures , again charting in uk top 40, , later 7 release of m realist . latter backed cover of replacements song bastards of young , band cribs cite large influence. non-album single don t wanna relevant? paired album cut our bovine public , again climbed uk top 40. there numerous festival slots around time including main stage slots @ lollapalooza, t in park, , v festival, returning fuji rock, , first time appearance @ coachella amongst others. in november 2007 cribs invited re-formed sex pistols play them 3 nights @ brixton academy in celebration of 30 year anniversary of never mind bollocks in december band announced 3 intimate shows @ old haunt brudenell social club in aid of cystic fibrosis play 3 albums date in sequence secret unannounced support bands each night (franz ferdinand, kate nash, , kaiser chiefs respectively). documented band s second dvd, 3 disc live @ brudenell social club. in year-end issues men s needs named third-best track of 2007 nme album coming in @ no. 9, track of year 2007 metro newspaper , making annual 100 best tracks list in rolling stone magazine in usa.

2008 began cribs being nominated 4 awards @ annual nme awards ceremony (best british band, best live band, best track , hero of year ryan jarman). through asked headline annual nme awards tour, undertook through january , february featuring of band s largest headline shows point , culminating in show @ o2 arena in london. made live appearance @ awards ceremony itself, playing new single m realist , cover of panic smiths, featuring new guitarist johnny marr (of aforementioned band), had been guesting them throughout tour. usa tour followed this, , more festival appearances including main stage slots @ isle of wight festival, rockness, primavera festival, fuji rock , sziget, headline appearance on john peel stage @ glastonbury, , headlining second stage @ reading , leeds festivals.

ignore ignorant (2009–2010)

after chance meeting johnny marr (at time member of modest mouse) in portland, or cribs , johnny became close friends. once modest mouse completed touring duties record, cribs , johnny started hang around , jam - s been going , shame cut short, original intention doing ep band told bbc 6 music in january 2008. later announced working on album , johnny had joined full-time member of group.

much of remainder of 2008 spent writing new material in portland, or, manchester , wakefield, followed short uk tour taking in glasgow abc, bradford st. georges hall, 2 nights @ manchester ritz, , heaven in london road-test of new songs before recording commenced. studio time booked march 2009 in los angeles veteran producer nick launay (nick cave, pil, yeah yeah yeahs). ross jarman performed of drum tracks recording broken wrist after skateboard accident. promotion ignore ignorant album came in form of intimate alternative leeds/reading show @ hmv in leeds. scheduled same weekend reading leeds festival. band played several songs new album old favourites. afterwards, ryan jarman seen browsing cd s in hmv , being available fans meet him.

preceded single cheat on me , album ignore ignorant released on 7 september 2009, , scored cribs first uk top ten album. released same week beatles re-issued entire 13 lp back-catalogue, ignore ignorant managed out-sell 2 of them chart @ number 8, band described surreal . touring began headline slot @ white air festival in brighton followed uk tour of large halls. band went on tour japan (including show @ budokan arctic monkeys) on south korea headlined grand mint festival @ olympic park, seoul. next united states/canada tour, european arena tour franz ferdinand before cribs returned uk largest headline shows date.

in december 2009, ignore ignorant placed @ number 11 in mojo magazine s albums of year , , @ number 7 in fly s albums of year . nme placed @ no. 30 in end of year list, making cheat on me track of year. in japan, crossbeat magazine placed @ no. 8 in albums of 2009 list, whilst music magazine called no. 1 album of 2009. both magazines leading publications in japan. @ same time, new fellas named album of century q.

2010 began extensive united states , canada tour, before heading off dates in australia , new zealand. festival appearances including glastonbury, lollapalooza, fuji rock, benecassim, sziget , pukkelpop amongst others followed. during time band invited support aerosmith @ 2 arena shows in spain , france. record store day 2010 cribs released hot split 7 single portland, or band thermals on legendary riot grrrl label kill rock stars. on 9 august 2010, bbc radio 1 dj zane lowe announced during show playing brand new cribs song night. next day, housewife released officially on itunes. no one, music industry insiders band s fans, had idea new single being geared until moment. cover art featured ryan , gary in drag. later month band appeared on main stage once again @ reading , leeds festivals close album campaign. these marr s last shows cribs.

in belly of brazen bull (2011–2012)

after announcing marr s departure group on 11 april 2011, cribs started work on writing follow ignore ignorant, mooted spring 2012 release. during time, recorded cover of original 70 s canadian punk band dishrags death in family canadian mint records compilation. on summer played several headlining slots @ uk festivals in 2011, show @ le zenith in paris strokes. in june 2011 made first trip brazil, playing 2 shows in são paulo. in december 2011 headlined clockenflap festival in hong kong, debuting new songs come on, no-one , , anna first time.

the cribs announced title of fifth studio album in belly of brazen bull , track-listing on 14 february 2012. album recorded @ tarbox road studio in new york david fridmann, london’s abbey road , chicago s ear studio engineer steve albini. on 14 february, bbc radio 1 dj zane lowe premiered first taster album, chi-town on radio show , played song 3 times. during time, both band , song title trending on twitter. shortly after announcement made, band embarked on quick uk tour, preview new material , promote upcoming single, slated april. in march, band headed out on tour of united states, concluding in april, , later month released first official single new album come on, no-one . european tour followed, , full-scale uk tour in may — kicking off performance @ 2012 camden crawl. during tour band introduced turner prize winning artist martin creed, acting support band. album released on 7 may 2012 , provide band second uk top 10 record, charting @ number 9.

the next month, band headed out tour of united states , canada, before flying japan headline hostess weekender festival @ yebisu garden hall in tokyo, show in osaka. in july, second official single album, glitters gold released on special gold glitter vinyl. band toured italy, , toured european festival circuit throughout of summer, including large outdoor show foo fighters in belfast boucher playing fields, , engagement @ reading , leeds festival, band destroy instruments , stage set @ climax of reading show.

september see release of third , final single album. anna , unlike prior singles, made available download only, , featured collaboration aforementioned martin creed. band , creed had been looking project collaborate on since meeting on tour earlier in year, , artist provided work #1431 video single. in october cribs headlined sŵn festival in cardiff, , headed out on uk , irish tour. during tour, cribs awarded spirit of independence award @ q awards 2012 on 22 october. @ conclusion of uk tour, band headed eastern europe where, amongst other dates, visit croatia, czech republic, greece , turkey first time. following these dates, band headed south america play show in brazil, , on argentina show @ open air hockey arena club ciudad de buenos aires personal fest festival. 2013 see band visit australia 3 shows in january, concluding live touring in belly of brazen bull .

in end of year lists, album placed guardian (#22), nme (#8), fly (#21), fake diy (#3) amongst others in uk.

payola (2013)

on 20 november 2012 cribs announced details of first best of compilation, payola, released on 11 march 2013 via wichita recordings mark group s 10th anniversary. 22 track album saw first official release of leather jacket love song - recorded @ sessions in 2010, final cribs song feature johnny marr. special 40-track anthology edition released additional 18 track disc containing b-sides , rarities. on 29th of february, band made fourth appearance on cover of nme magazine, came additional cd release payola: demos . companion disc payola featured demo versions of of significant songs featured on payola , 3 unheard , unreleased tracks harking far 2001.

around same time band played nme awards show @ shepherds bush empire , several other headline dates around country. on summer, cribs played numerous festivals in uk , europe, including headline slots @ y not festival , show @ olympic park (london), short tour of scottish venues. autumn saw band head australia anniversary tour , before venturing asia lengthy tour there. cities , countries visited on trip include thailand (bangkok), malaysia (kuala lumpur), vietnam (saigon), 2 shows in japan (tokyo), show @ kowloonbay international trade & exhibition centre in hong kong, , large outdoor show in meadow @ gardens bay in singapore. year rounded out 2 sold out christmas shows @ leeds academy

2014 began quietly, band began writing sessions next studio album. shows announced part of weezer cruise florida bahamas in february. later in year, cribs returned uk uk festival slots, including headlining truck festival , tramlines festival amongst others, , italian tour franz ferdinand.

for sisters (2014–2016)

in august 2014, music week reported band had signed sony red. followed news band s sixth album produced former cars frontman ric ocasek, known work artists including weezer, nada surf , guided voices. frenchkiss records named music week band s new label north america, band later announce signing arts & crafts. ivory hand , teaser track upcoming album had midnight digital release on 19 january 2015. received first radio play later day bbc s steve lamacq. later made single of week nme. album, sisters,was released in uk on 23 march 2015; although due in north america on 24 march 2015, released same day. go on become cribs third consecutive uk top 10 album.

the first single album burning no 1 , debuted bbc radio 1 on 2 february, zane lowe made hottest record in world . accompanying video, shot on bahamian island of exuma released on 16 february , clocked on 200,000 views on youtube in first week.

the new songs road tested on quick uk tour of sold out shows, , band went new york city play 3 night residency across 3 different venues (2 in brooklyn, 1 in manhattan), before heading austin, texas annual sxsw showcase, playing 4 shows across 3 days. after returning sxsw, cribs embarked on week-long tour of in-store performances , signings @ independent record stores throughout uk.

us touring began few weeks later in san francisco tour of west coast, , include second appearance @ coachella festival, playing sunday of both weekends , playing headline shows throughout state , las vegas in intervening week. outing, band joined on stage michael cummings of nyc band skaters.

back in uk, cribs headlined leeds town hall part of live @ leeds festival in may, before headlining great escape festival in brighton 2 performances, , 2 shows in ireland. summer play on main stages @ liverpool sound city festival , t in park, , made third appearance on other stage @ glastonbury. play @ festival internacional de benicassim in spain.

the cribs went out asia, headline show in tokyo, , main stage appearance @ pentaport rock festival in incheon, south korea. later month appear on main stage @ reading , leeds festivals third time before heading out north america full tour there. during band s performance @ fairmount theatre in montreal part of pop montreal festival, band perform safe lee ranaldo performing spoken word part live in person second time since song s release (the first coming in 2008 @ music hall of williamsburg).

a full uk tour announced during period, , took place in october , november, included dates @ glasgow barrowlands, manchester albert hall, , roundhouse in camden amongst others.

in 2016 cribs announced headliners of camden rocks festival taking place in june. on summer cribs play main stage @ isle of wight festival, y not festival, , secret unannounced headliners of in woods festival in kent. during summer, cribs played largest headline show date, @ 8,000 capacity open air millennium square in leeds.

another tour of asia followed, including stops in s. korea (seoul), japan (tokyo , osaka) , band s first engagement in china, play shanghai rugby football stadium concrete , grass festival. shortly after show cribs announced final show of sisters tour.

24-7 rock star shit (2017–present)

on 3 february 2017 announced cribs subject own exhibition in hometown @ wakefield museum. exhibit featured 3 large glass containers dedicated each of band members chosen instruments various memorabilia such school photographs, gig posters , favourite records. exhibit unveiled on 14 february 2017 ross, appeared on bbc north playing drum kit within respective glass container. exhibition ran until july 2017.

on 7 february 2017 cribs announced 10th anniversary tour of third album entitled men s needs, women s needs, forever consisting of 7 dates across uk. second london date later added due popular demand. tour commenced on 11 may in glasgow , finished on 20 may show @ leeds first direct arena joined on stage lee ranaldo spoken word part in safe. band performed album in full headlining slot on baltic stage @ liverpool sound city festival. following final night of initial tour @ midnight on 21 may, cribs tweeted series of code next day revealed coordinates various record stores across uk , us, along specific timestamp each store. arriving @ location @ specified time allow customers purchase white label single entitled year of hate, each single hand numbered out of total of 247. handful of record stores announced on each day next week. cryptic coordinate approach dropped on 22 may due recent attack in manchester. single entered uk vinyl singles chart @ number 3 on week commencing 26 may 2017. song saw digital release on 16 june, until way hear playing vinyl or via bbc iplayer song had single airing on steve lamacq show.

a second single in palace released digitally on 2 june 2017 music video released on 13 june. album 24-7 rock star shit announced on 24 july 2017 (the 24th day of 7th month) 11 august 2017 alongside music video rainbow ridge, available free download pre-order of album. if album pre-ordered jumbo records or crash records in leeds, first-come, first-served customers gain entry launch gig @ leeds belgrave on 13 august. announced gig on release day of album @ house of vans, entrants selected free-to-enter ballot via vans website.
