hankford died on 12 december 1423, while still in office. peculiar legend associated death, based on strong local tradition, reported both robert danby (d. 1474) , raphael holinshed (d. 1580). allegedly hankford had instructed forester of estate @ annery shoot arrow entering forest, himself deliberately wander forest @ night, accordingly shot. death appears possibly noble form of suicide, not debar him christian burial. late 17th century there still tree-stump known locally hankford s oak judge supposedly killed. whether story true or not, hankford had written testament 2 days before death. buried in monkleigh church, had contributed extensive rebuilding, , ornate easter sepulchre monument survives in annery chapel in monkleigh church.
