the concept of east asia grouping has significant history going idea first promoted in 1991 malaysian prime minister mahathir mohamad.

the final report in 2002 of east asian study group, established asean plus 3 countries, based on eas involving asean plus three, therefore not involving australia, new zealand, or india. eas proposed asean-led development, summit linked asean summit meetings. however, issue countries beyond in asean eas extended.

after period of review, summit grew 16 18 nations adding united states , russia summit. represented foreign ministers @ fifth eas, 2 new members invited formally join sixth eas. tensions between members of summit continued impede members developing more ambitious program.
