fire department
the cayuga heights fire department founded in 1955 , provides fire, rescue, , als first-response emergency medical services village, areas of town of ithaca, , parts of cornell university. department all-volunteer agency response times averaging under 3 minutes. due department s dedicated volunteers, innovative , highly successful bunker program allows 7-8 firefighter/emt s live in second floor dormitory , provide duty shifts in exchange room in station. unlike conventional membership recruiting/acceptance methods, department recruits , restricts new member acceptance bi-annual recruit classes in tandem academic semesters. result, many firefighters cornell students.
the department s current home, ronald e. anderson fire station, built in 2000 , named after then-mayor. (the fire company technically 501(c)3 non-profit independent of village, allows sponsor annual fundraising drives.)

the cayuga heights police department small department consisting of chief, sergeant, 4 full-time officers, clerk, , several part-time officers , school crossing guards.
