history

the station supposed home of wjmo-fm before studio/call letter/format swap took place between owners of wjmo , wsrs (now were) in 1958, putting license in hands of tuschman broadcasting company. on may 4, 1960, new station first signed on wabq-fm. may 1961, station changed callsign wxen. new callsign stood xenophon zapis, station show producer later helped establish wzak station s owner.


throughout 1960s , 1970s, wxen , wzak both featured nationality programming, is, 1 or 2 hour programs devoted music , programming different nationalities, such polish, slovenian or hungarian, program hosts speaking in native language. used slogan station of nations. tuschman broadcasting company sold both wxen , wabq booth broadcasting of detroit in 1964. booth american installed rock format on march 13, 1977 branding zip 106 , changing call letters wzzp on march 21, 1977.


lite rock 106½

the station changed wltf on march 5, 1984, , aired adult contemporary format lite rock 106½ . lovelite jingles created station jim brickman in 1987. wltf cleveland s number 1 radio station through late 1980s , 1990s, morning program hosted trapper jack elliott rated number one. billboard magazine named wltf adult contemporary station of year in 1991. other stations such wqal , wdok started competing head-to-head similar formats , gaining market share.

booth broadcasting merged broadcast alchemy , merged company became secret communications in 1994, selling off both wltf , wtam jacor communications in july 1997. shortly afterwards, station flipped format hot ac, branding mix 106.5 . station changed callsign wmvx on october 17, 1997. jacor absorbed iheartmedia (as clear channel communications) in 1999. wmvx, station aired both 80s , 90s versions of backtrax usa kid kelly. 2004 2009, wmvx carried american top 20 casey kasem until show ended production.


from 2009 2010, aired weekday valentine in morning show, based kbig in los angeles. wmvx home brian , joe radio show, popular local program, september 1998 until april 2009; dismissal part of clear channel s nationwide budget , salary cuts.


106.5 lake

on november 12, 2010, wmvx flipped christmas music format, lasted until christmas day. wmvx went hot ac format until 10 a.m. following wednesday (december 29), @ point began stunt playing wide variety of music various genres. station s website contained countdown time new format take effect, on morning of january 3, 2011. leading change, hour of songs new in title played, such honeymoon suite s new girl , shins s new slang , inxs s new sensation , theme newlywed game, , dead or alive s brand new lover . @ 7:30 a.m. on january 3, 2011, station changed branding 106.5 lake , , format adult hits. first song played in new format ian hunter s cleveland rocks . on january 17, 2011, station adopted callsign whlk reflect new branding ( lake ).
