membertou urban first nation community. named after grand chief henri membertou (1510-1611) membertou first nation belongs greater tribal group of mi kmaq nation.
membertou not situated @ present location. many years ago, membertou (formally known kings road reserve) located off of kings road, along sydney harbour. in 1916, exchequer court of canada ordered relocation of 125 mi’kmaq; first time aboriginal community had been legally forced through courts relocate in canadian history. in 1926, membertou community officially moved present-day location in vicinity of mira road, nova scotia.
membertou first nation has been successful in diversifying economy, featuring convention centre, gaming centre, gas bar, business centre, hotel , other investments within community. membertou sports , wellness centre, features ymca , 2 nhl-sized rinks opened in 2016. currently, business development called churchill crossing being built across highway 125 interchange. feature big box stores , light-commercial , retail development. similar dartmouth crossing in halifax regional municipality.
