the earthquake measured 7.5 on richter magnitude scale (revised usgs 7.3) , caused 80-million ton landslide, formed landslide dam on madison river. earthquake powerful hit state of montana in historic times. landslide traveled down south flank of sheep mountain, @ estimated 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), killing 28 people camping along shores of hebgen lake , downstream along madison river. upstream faulting caused earthquake forced waters of hebgen lake shift violently. seiche, wave effect created wind, atmospheric pressure, or seismic activity on water, crested on hebgen dam, causing cracks , erosion.
the earthquake created fault scarps 20 ft (6.1 m) high in area near hebgen lake , lake bottom dropped same distance. 32,000 acres (130 km) of area near hebgen lake subsided more 10 ft (3.0 m). several geysers in northwestern sections in yellowstone national park erupted , numerous hot springs became temporarily muddied.
within immediate vicinity of earthquake , resultant landslide, few dozen cabins , homes destroyed. overall damages buildings , roads minor damage costs placed @ 11 million dollars in 1959. aftershocks 6.5 on richter magnitude scale continued several months.
