uniforms

from 1938 1964, there no official uniform. following lifting of ban on martial arts in vietnam in 1963, first council of vovinam-viet vo dao gathered in 1964 codify vovinam, establishing rank hierarchy , uniforms , codifying training curriculum according rank. color blue adopted official color vovinam uniforms. separate development of việt võ Đạo federation in 1973 until 1990 uniforms color black.


in summer of 1990, vovinam masters around world met @ international vovinam-viet vo dao conference in california goal of creating structured organization vovinam việt võ Đạo outside vietnam (the international vovinam-viet vo dao federation). 1 of decisions suit in vovinam việt võ Đạo blue worldwide.

blue stands factor of sea, , hope - hope in being successful in learning vovinam.


with following 3 exams yellow stripes added blue belt. 3rd yellow stripe followed yellow belt.



yellow symbolically stands skin color of asian people. symbolizes skin deep internalization of martial art , philosophy.


in other martial arts belt black. therefore, vovinam student carries yellow belt allowed carry black belt. makes comparison other martial arts easier, e.g. in public performances. person wears yellow belt 1 or more stripes considered instructor.


following in longer period of time, respectively 3 red stripes added yellow belt. corresponds 1st, 2nd, respectively 3rd degree blackbelt (Đẳng). exam following 3rd red stripe master s exam. passing exam assigns right wear red belt circulating yellow border (4th degree blackbelt).



red stands blood , intensive flame. student has internalized vovinam (việt võ Đạo) further.


the 5th 10th degree blackbelt shown completed red belt 1 6 white stripes.



white stands infiniteness, bones; symbol of depth of spirit. white belt assigns master absolute mastery of vovinam việt võ Đạo.


on white belt thin, lengthwise stripes in blue, black, yellow , red symbolize whole of vovinam (việt võ Đạo) again. belt reserved chưởng môn .


now, vovinam has 2 different sets of belt ranking because of different training program: wvvf vovinam (headquarter: vietnam) uses traditional program , vovinam-việt võ Đạo world federation .  (headquarter: france) uses new training program.


name plates

every change of belt color name plate color changes. blue belt students start off yellow text on blue name plates. yellow belt name plate changes red text on yellow ground. red belt comes along white text on red name plate. patriarch carries red text on white name plate. thin, colored lines in blue, yellow , red shown on upper , lower borders of white name plate.
