the borneo campaign of 1945 last major campaign in south west pacific area. in series of amphibious assaults between 1 may , 21 july, australian corps, under general leslie morshead, attacked japanese forces occupying island. allied naval , air forces, centered on 7th fleet under admiral thomas kinkaid, australian first tactical air force , thirteenth air force played important roles in campaign.


the campaign opened landing on small island of tarakan on 1 may. followed on 1 june simultaneous assaults in north west, on island of labuan , coast of brunei. week later australians attacked japanese positions in north borneo. attention of allies switched central east coast, last major amphibious assault of world war ii, @ balikpapan on 1 july.


although campaign criticized in australia @ time, , in subsequent years, pointless or waste of lives of soldiers, did achieve number of objectives, such increasing isolation of significant japanese forces occupying main part of dutch east indies, capturing major oil supplies , freeing allied prisoners of war, being held in deteriorating conditions. @ 1 of worst sites, around sandakan in borneo, 6 of 2,500 british , australian prisoners survived.
