most, not all, large size national banknotes showed charter number of issuing bank on obverse. in cases charter number printed once, typically charter number appeared twice. issuing bank s charter number positioned inside engraved border, overprinted elsewhere on obverse. aid treasury workers in sorting banknotes, later large size notes showed letter indicate region of country in issuing bank located— n north, e east, s south, w west (now called midwest), or p pacific coast.
