at age nine, young john weissmüller contracted polio. @ suggestion of doctor, took swimming battle disease. after family moved western pennsylvania chicago, continued swimming , earned spot on ymca swim team.


according military draft registration records world war i, peter , elizabeth apparently still late 1917. on paperwork, peter listed brewer, working elston , fullerton brewery. , family living @ 226 west north avenue in chicago. in book, tarzan, father, johnny weissmuller jr. stated although rumors of peter weissmüller living ripe old age, remarrying along way , spawning large brood of little weissmüllers reported, no 1 in family aware of ultimate fate. peter signed consent 19-year-old john weissmuller s passport application in 1924, preceding johnny s olympic competition in france. in 1930 federal census, elizabeth weissmüller, age 49, has listed her, sons john p. , peter j., , peter s wife dorothy. elizabeth listed widow.
