history
1959–1996

on 15 january 1959, original tyne tees television news service launched short evening bulletins , weekly magazine programme, north east roundabout broadcast each friday. on 30 march 1964, begun airing nightly modified name north east newsview. in 1969, station s first colour television news programme broadcast under new name of today @ six. 6 september 1976, tyne tees longest running news programme northern life aired notable presenters including paul frost , pam royle. on 5 october 1992 replaced tyne tees today (and 31 march 1993 sub-regional service known network north south of region only). in november 1995 both tyne tees today , network north renamed tyne tees news although separate news services north , south of region unaffected. in january 1996 joined lifestyle programme tonight.


1996–2005

on monday 2 september 1996 following defection of popular mike neville tyne tees bbc s north after 32 years, north east tonight launched, replacing 2 separate news services , lifestyle programme.


mike neville announced retirement programme on 5 june 2006 after year on sick leave.


2005–2009

in august 2005, following chief presenter mike neville s absence month prior, north east tonight opted 2 separate news services tyne tees region once again:



north: (northumberland , tyne , wear), broadcast pontop pike , chatton transmitters.
south: (county durham, teesside , north yorkshire), broadcasting bilsdale transmitter.

other bulletins including gmtv bulletins, weekday lunchtime, weekday late, , weekend evening pan-regional.


2009–2013

in september 2007, itv plc announced tyne tees newsroom merged itv border, subject ofcom approval.


on 26 september 2008, ofcom (the office of communications, uk s broadcasting regulator) authorised itv s plans save £40 million year making regional programming cutbacks. these include axing mid-morning bulletins on weekdays , lunchtime bulletins @ weekends, merging number of regions , axing non-news regional programmes.


as part of major itv regional news cuts, taking place november 2008 february 2009, around 50 staff made redundant or accepted voluntary redundancy @ itv tyne tees. on 16 december 2008, press gazette leaked journalists told leaving collections banned, along leaving presentations , on-screen goodbyes. in staff memo, head of news catherine houlihan cited ban because of large number of staff being made redundant @ station. 1 worker told press gazette morale @ rock bottom . main anchors announced ian payne , pam royle.


the final north , south sub-regional editions of north east tonight aired on 13 february 2009.


itv tyne tees & border formed on 25 february 2009, lookaround , north east tonight titles retained 6pm programme , late bulletin each weekday, whilst shorter bulletins known tyne tees & border news.


the remaining sub-regional elements were:



the opening 15 minutes of main 6pm programme.
full late night bulletins on weeknights, following itv news @ ten.
localised weather forecasts.

on 14 january 2013, tyne tees news service relaunched , rebranded itv news tyne tees.


2013–present

on 14 june 2013, reported itv restore full 30-minute edition of lookaround , shorter bulletins border viewers, leading demerger of tyne tees , border services. ofcom approved plans month later, allowing tyne tees reintroduce own full regional news service. minutage requirement main evening programme reduced 30 20 minutes, although itv retain full half-hour option of using aggregate content other regions. daytime , weekend bulletins tyne tees region reintroduced on monday 16 september 2013.


the news service produced , broadcast studios @ watermark, gateshead reporters based @ teesside office in billingham. both regional services utilise same presenter(s) , studio/set, therefore 1 of 2 programmes - depending on day s news - pre-recorded live shortly before broadcast. head of news michaela byrne.
