after leaving tears fears, smith released first solo album, soul on board, in 1993. album unsuccessful in uk, , not released @ in u.s. smith later claimed made album purely fulfil record contract phonogram/mercury.
mayfield , aeroplane
after moving new york, smith formed band mayfield guitarist-producer charlton pettus , featured russ irwin & doug petty on keyboards, curt on bass , vocals , shawn pelton on drums. according smith, name of band play on words (curt mayfield) based on name of legendary american soul singer curtis mayfield. band live act did release self-titled album in 1998, met little success.
smith later released album aeroplane under own name. in u.s., six-track ep, in canada , elsewhere, earlier mayfield album combined additional songs u.s. ep.
in october 2011, smith announced on website re-release mayfield album on 15 november 2011. new release, on kook media label, include bonus version of song trees featuring janice whaley.
halfway, pleased
during 2000, smith began work on become halfway, pleased, project put on hold when re-established contact roland orzabal again after decade of silence. conversations culminated in tears fears reforming 2004 s loves happy ending led worldwide tour, wasn t until 2006 smith resumed work on halfway, pleased. semi-autobiographical album explores smith s relationships children, parents , friends.
in april 2007, french record label xiii bis records released halfway, pleased in france. 14 tracks included original version of (which recorded tears fears on loves happy ending); live version of snow hill 2005 tears fears uk tour; single version of 7 of sundays (also recorded duet french singer so); , cover of on ira tous au paradis (also available on tribute polnareff). 2 music videos made 7 of sundays – 1 solo track, , 1 duet so.
all songs except 7 of sundays co-written smith , charlton pettus. solo version of 7 of sundays co-written pettus , chesney hawkes; smith , sophie saillet helped adapt song duet version.
smith released album in u.s. , rest of world in may 2008 via own kook media label. kook release features different track listing, eliminating polnareff tribute , adding 2 new acoustic tracks ( coming out , 7 of sundays ). released under creative commons license allows fans distribute, perform , use songs long uses non-commercial , attributed smith.
smith has made limited live concert appearances in los angeles area support halfway, pleased. in january 2009, announced perform weekly residency @ standard hollywood in west hollywood, ca during month of february 2009. announced in mid-february standard had asked him extend through march 2009 , agreed. played similar residency there in october 2008.

in july 2013, announced smith release fourth solo album, first since 2008. album released on 16 july 2013.
