swale house on frenchgate, built around 1750, home headmaster , students of nearby grammar school, before being used hospital wounded officers in first world war. many years, headquarters of richmondshire district council, before being closed , sold off in 2013.


the georgian theatre royal, founded in 1788 actor samuel butler, off market place. decline in fortunes of theatre led closure in 1848 , used warehouse many years. in 1963 theatre restored , reopened, theatre museum added in 1979. more recently, theatre has become georgian theatre royal , extended in 2003 addition of new block providing services , access next original auditorium. 1 of britain s oldest extant theatres.


to west of town, on road marske, unusually named richmond out moor. nearby town picturesque easby abbey.
