the bishop s campus located on 500 acres (200 ha) of land @ junction of st. francis , massawippi rivers in eastern townships region of quebec. site of bishop s college, grassy knoll @ confluence of 2 rivers, provided natural setting architecture viewed integral subsidiary part of scenic vista. known oxford on massawippi architectural style, campus influenced gothic revival period , home of quebec s historic buildings, including st. mark s chapel. construction on campus began old arts in 1846 , continues today university s recent building, paterson hall, in 2003. campus provided setting films lost , delirious (2001) , covenant (2006).

mcgreer hall

mcgreer hall named in honour of arthur huffman mcgreer (1883–1947), principal 1922 1947. under leadership, curriculum in arts strengthened, teaching in experimental science initiated, enrolment doubled , financial stability , academic autonomy achieved. original central 5 bays of hall constructed in 1846, , lodge @ west end added in 1847 residence of first principal. following fire of 1876 gutted central block, hall rebuilt improved facilities, , in 1898, fund established in memory of robert hamilton, became possible extend third floor lodge ante-chapel , add central tower. in 1908 lodge converted student , faculty use , in 1909 library wing added.


bishop williams hall

james william williams (1825–1892) appointed headmaster of bishop s college school in 1857. in 1863 consecrated 4th anglican bishop of québec. participated vigorously in development of protestant public school system in québec , collaborated sir alexander galt in drawing section 93 of british north american act conferred upon parliament responsibility of protecting educational rights of minorities. original hall built in 1891 proceeds of subscription raised bcs old boys mark 25th anniversary of bishop williams consecration. destroyed fire later year, , rebuilt in 1892. serves lecture , presentation hall.


bandeen hall

bandeen hall built gymnasium undergraduates , boys of bishop s college school. in 1950, north-facing main door replaced large bay window , room became dining-hall norton-pollack residence complex. 1971 onward, meals served in dewhurst hall, , room again passed general use, serving in particular undergraduate pub, until memorial house converted purpose. in 1977, temporary studios fine arts departments of champlain college , university installed in hall , adjacent kitchen , storage areas. in 1990, result of success of learning life campaign, these areas converted classrooms, studios , offices university s music department, , hall converted concert hall, named late robert a. bandeen, chancellor of university 1981 1987, , wife, mona blair bandeen, generous benefactors of music @ bishop s.


centennial theatre

as performing arts centre, centennial theatre has played significant role in cultural life of eastern townships region on past 40 years. theatre, inaugurated on january 14, 1967, designed bring artists , audiences in atmosphere of visual intimacy , acoustic excellence. superb theatrical environment achieved recreating wide auditorium sweep reminiscent of greek amphitheatres; capacity of 549, centennial theatre provides actors, dancers , musicians significant audience, while maintaining close relationship of auditorium stage. italian stage house, proscenium , flies, extended forward in open stage concept means of apron elevator. many configurations made possible system have created surprising flexibility on stage. built @ first serve needs of drama department, opening of theatre dream come true of many students , professors, particularly of arthur motyer, director of university dramatic society. in 1975, bishop’s university , champlain college launched first cultural season @ centennial theatre. cultural series, called then, included classical music, dance, mime, theatre , jazz. centennial theatre’s mandate has been present high quality concerts , shows many fields of performing arts. theatre has presented al di meola, christopher plummer , natalie macmaster. through years, special efforts have been made serve english population of eastern townships. in 1989, film series offered better serve surrounding population.


today, centennial theatre has own administrative structure, including programming director who, of programming committee, books complete season, bringing renowned artists on world theatre. among many groups presented during past years 1 can count pianist marc-andré hamelin, dancer margie gillis, dance companies o vertigo , marie chouinard, penderecki , keller quartets, musici de montréal, south african johnny clegg , savuka, jazz vibraphonist gary burton, glenn miller orchestra, , many, many more. centennial theatre equipped 35mm projector, allows presentation of films in original version. in 1992, centennial theatre inaugurated newly renovated lobby, box office , offices presenting premiere of film city of joy, special guests cast , crew. final renovations completed in 2006.

originally added mcgreer hall in 1909 serve university library, converted office space during 1970s. in 1939 renovations historic mcgreer hall included complete renovation , restoration of library wing, had on years been subdivided 2 floors , magnificent wooden ceiling covered tiles. work on library wing completed in time sesquicentennial celebrations in 1993-1994, culminated in sherry reception governor-general in newly restored library wing, known former name old library. old library serves centre university archives housing official records of, or relating to, or people/activities connected bishop s university , special volumes concerning bishop s university. old library houses eastern townships research centre has been accredited quebec s ministère de la culture et des communications since 1991. eastern townships research centre archival collection consists of books, genealogical information, documents, photographs, postcards, maps, plans, , audio-visual material. used year-round faculty , students, room popular during summer months when people across canada , increasingly u.s. come research genealogy. room used throughout academic year lectures, receptions , other special events. room may used study hall, quiet place students.


john bassett memorial library

the john bassett memorial library provides study , research support students , faculty of both bishop s university , champlain college, lennoxville campus. present building, built in 1959, , expanded in 1970 , 1990, accommodates on 610 users, seminar rooms group study. library s holdings on 598,000 items, including books, microforms, , audio-visual materials, of approximately 19,550 periodical titles including online periodicals, accessed through online catalogue boris (bishop s online retrieval , information system). research , study further supported collections of canadian government documents, , maps. in-house resources augmented inter-library loan network.


art gallery

bishop s university houses foreman art gallery, exhibits contemporary , historical painting, sculpture, mixed media, installation, video , films students, faculty, canadian , international artists. hung throughout buildings on campus, collection consists of 150 works, many 19th- , 20th-century canadian artists.


nicolls building

the nicolls building named in honour of reverend jasper hume nicolls (1818–1877). in 1845, nicolls appointed first principal of bishop s college. raised in city of québec , graduated bachelor of arts oriel college in university of oxford. fellow of queen s college, oxford when appointed position here. in 1853, along bishop mountain, instrumental in obtaining royal charter raised college status of university. located on roof of nicolls building, observatory recent addition bishop s university. observatory houses schmidt-cassegrain telescope , open public.

the bishop s campus uniquely features golf course , club: old lennoxville golf club. club founded bishop s university , received charter royal canadian golf association in year 1897. there 4 golf clubs pre-exist lennoxville in rcga. are: royal montreal founded in 1873; royal quebec founded in 1874; murray bay founded in 1876; , royal ottawa founded in 1891. in 1963, directors of lennoxville golf club founded , constructed milby course. owned , operated lennoxville golf club, directors continued operate both clubs under umbrella of lennoxville golf club until 1975. 2 different locations being referred lennoxville golf club (milby course) , lennoxville golf club (the old course), present name of old lennoxville golf club established. course remains 1 of oldest in canada.


st. mark s chapel

st. mark’s chapel consecrated in 1857 george jehoshaphat mountain. st. mark’s in perpendicular gothic style, prevalent in england during tudor period. façade, fenestration, string course , buttresses, shows influence of 13th century’s formal architecture vocabulary. ogival windows, twinned on long side , in groups of 3 on west façade, repeat same arrangement can seen in salisbury cathedral. entrance door, adorned ogival arch, of eton college in windsor or trinity college, cambridge. chapel destroyed fire in 1891. corporation decided rebuild on same site, memorial principal nicholls, , during next 6 years superb interior furniture , panelling completed sherbrooke cabinet-making firm of george long. of finer carving thought have been work of assistant, georges bélanger. made of beautifully crafted eastern townships ash, interior of chapel remarkable exquisite quality of wood sculptures. maintained , beautifully preserved, st. mark s chapel declared cultural property quebec ministere des affaires culturelles in 1989.

students known strong affinity towards university during sports games. popular spot social gatherings nearby golden lion pub. in 2005, cbc s rick mercer report named best student pub in canada.
