the rev. robert brickel, rector of st. michael s church, hoole 1848–1881, raised money public subscription in lancashire, oxford , cambridge fund creation of new chancel , sanctuary church named horrocks chapel . chancel completed 1824, , sanctuary 1858. vestry extended in 1998–1999, , first window in north wall, installed in 1872, has stained glass roundels commemorating transits of venus of 1874 , 2004. there marble tablet commemorating horrocks. church clock, contributed parishioners commemoration of horrocks, installed in 1859; sundial, installed in 1875, has quotation horrocks ( sine sole sileo ) translates without sun silent .

in 1903 artist ford madox brown commissioned produce murals known manchester murals manchester town hall. painting entitled crabtree watching transit of venus ad 1639 romanticised depiction of crabtree s observation of event.

on 9 june 2004, day after first of 21st-century pair of venus transits occurred predicted horrocks, commemorative street nameplate in memory of william crabtree unveiled @ junction of lower broughton road , priory grove, marks northern boundary of crabtree croft. in december 2005, commemorative plaque unveiled few yards away near ivy cottage on lower broughton road, thought have been home of crabtree , family @ time collaborating horrocks. second transit of pair occurred on 5 , 6 june 2012, , marked celebration held in church @ hoole, streamed live worldwide on nasa website. celebration held @ crabtree s former home in broughton when nasa broadcast re-creation of observation @ ivy cottage, inspired ford madox brown mural, millions of viewers, , projected live video stream of transit hawaii onto side of house.
