by end of 77th year, coretta began experiencing health problems. husband s former secretary, dora mcdonald, assisted part-time in period. hospitalized in april 2005, month after speaking in selma @ 40th anniversary of selma voting rights movement, diagnosed heart condition , discharged on 78th , final birthday. later, suffered several small strokes. on august 16, 2005, hospitalized after suffering stroke , mild heart attack. initially, unable speak or move right side. king s daughter bernice reported had been able move leg on sunday, august 21 while other daughter , oldest child yolanda asserted family expected recover. released piedmont hospital in atlanta on september 22, 2005, after regaining of speech , continued physiotherapy @ home. due continuing health problems, mrs. king cancelled number of speaking , traveling engagements throughout remainder of 2005. on january 14, 2006, coretta made last public appearance in atlanta @ dinner honoring husband s memory. on january 26, 2006, king checked rehabilitation center in rosarito beach, mexico under different name. doctors did not learn real identity until medical records arrived next day, , did not begin treatment due condition.


coretta scott king died on late evening of january 30, 2006, @ rehabilitation center in rosarito beach, mexico, in oasis hospital undergoing holistic therapy stroke , advanced-stage ovarian cancer. main cause of death believed respiratory failure due complications ovarian cancer. clinic @ died called hospital santa monica, licensed clinica santo tomas. after reports indicated not legally licensed perform surgery, take x-rays, perform laboratory work or run internal pharmacy, of doing, reports of being operated highly controversial medical figure kurt donsbach, shut down medical commissioner dr. francisco versa. king s body flown mexico atlanta on february 1, 2006.


king s eight-hour funeral @ new birth missionary baptist church in lithonia, georgia held on february 7, 2006. bernice king delivered eulogy. u.s. presidents george w. bush, bill clinton, george h.w. bush , jimmy carter attended, did wives, exception of former first lady barbara bush had previous engagement. ford family absent due illness of president ford (who himself died later year). senator , future president barack obama, among other elected officials, attended televised service.

mrs. king temporarily laid in mausoleum on grounds of king center until permanent place next husband s remains built. had expressed family members , others wanted remains lie next husband s @ king center. on november 20, 2006, new mausoleum containing bodies of both dr. , mrs. king unveiled in front of friends , family. mausoleum third resting place of martin luther king, , second of mrs. king.
