on 14 september 1999, @ 21:47 utc, boeing 757–204 charter flight cardiff, wales, uk, 236 passengers , 9 crew left runway when landing in storm , broke apart. after leaving runway, ran 343 metres across flat grassland beside runway, before going diagonally on substantial earth mound adjacent airport boundary, becoming semi-airborne result. beyond mound hit , severed number of medium-sized trees , right engine struck boundary fence. aircraft yawed considerably right, passed through fence, landed again in field, , main landing gears collapsed. stopped after 244-metre slide across field. damage substantial: fuselage broken in 2 places , landing gear , both engines detached. remarkably, there no immediate fatalities 44 people, including aircraft s captain, received hospital treatment severe minor injuries.
