helenius joined aalborg bk youth squad @ age of 13 , received first contract while in u19 squad. in 2009–2010 season, became top goalscorer of aalborg bk under-19 squad in danish under-19 league 22 goals. enough him finish second on overall goal scorer list, beaten brent mcgrath scored 29 goals brøndby if.

on 18 june 2013, helenius signed aston villa on three-year deal believed in region of £1.2m. scored header on debut in villa s first pre-season game of season, against german team sv rödinghausen. followed headed goal against vfl bochum on second appearance club. made premier league debut on 24 august 2013 @ villa park against liverpool ended in 1–0 defeat. helenius scored first goal club on 4 january 2014 against sheffield united in fa cup third round tie @ villa park.
