banff first settled in 1880s, after transcontinental railway built through bow valley. in 1883, 3 canadian pacific railway workers stumbled upon series of natural hot springs on side of sulphur mountain. in 1885, canada established federal reserve of 26 km (10 sq mi) around cave , basin hot springs, , began promoting area international resort , spa way support new railway. in 1887, reserve area increased 673 km (260 sq mi) , named rocky mountain park . beginning of canada s national park system.


the area named banff in 1884 george stephen, president of canadian pacific railway, recalling birthplace in banff, scotland. canadian pacific built series of grand hotels along rail line , advertised banff springs hotel international tourist resort.


the banff townsite developed near railway station service centre tourists visiting park. administered government of canada s national parks system until 1990 when town of banff became incorporated municipality within canadian national park.


an internment camp set @ banff , castle mountain in dominion park july 1915 july 1917.


in 1985, united nations declared banff national park, 1 of canadian rocky mountain parks, world heritage site. banff remains 1 of popular tourist destinations in canada.


one of notable figures of banff norman luxton, known mr. banff . published crag , canyon newspaper, built king edward hotel , lux theatre, , founded sign of goat curio shop, led development of luxton museum of plains indians, buffalo nations museum. , family helped organize banff indian days , banff winter carnival.


in 1976, international astronomical union s working group planetary system nomenclature (iau/wgpsn) officially adopted name banff crater on mars, after town in alberta. crater @ latitude 17.7° north , longitude 30.8° west. diameter 5 km (3.1 mi).
