it probable ventimiglia had bishop fifth century; first known joannes (680). among successors were:



cardinal antonio pallavicino (1484) , alessandro fregoso, both more distinguished warriors clerics;
filippo de mari (1519), restored ecclesiastical discipline;
carlo visconti (1561), later cardinal;
carlo grimaldo (1565), distinguished himself @ council of trent;
girolamo curlo (1614), died poison in corsica, had been sent commissary apostolic:
gianfrancesco gandolfi (1622), negotiated peace between savoy , genoa;
antonio maria bacigaluppi (1773).

the diocese has been suffragan genoa since 1775.
