the bishop s university teams known bishop s gaiters , compete in cis. although logo , mascot suggest term stems word alligator, gaiter refers leg covering worn anglican bishops until middle of 20th century. gaiters represented 7 varsity teams (football, men s & women s basketball, men s & women s rugby, women s soccer, , golf) , 4 club teams (men s lacrosse, women s hockey, men s hockey, men s soccer). bishop s gaiters have long history university. days marked massive participation in team sports such cricket , football. rugby football began in 1888 , canadian football budding varsity sport 1930s. gaiters football team s home stadium coulter field used practice facility montreal alouettes of canadian football league.


in football, gaiters have made 5 appearances in cis semifinal bowls, 1994 churchill bowl. in basketball, gaiters won women s national championships in 1982-83 , 1983–84 , men s national championship in 1997-98. both genders, gaiters last quebec-based school win national championship.


there 9 former bishop s football players in cfl: adrian clarke, stephen adekolu, shawn gore, jamall lee, james yurichuk, dan mccullough, tim cronk (all british columbia lions), junior turner, justin conn (both calgary stampeders), mathieu boulay (winnipeg blue bombers), , kyle jones (hamilton tiger-cats).

at both home , away athletic competitions, bu students can heard singing school fight song or alma mater. bishop’s official school song, “alma mater,” written in 1937 , continues favorite. in 1964, however, lyrics “drink toast bishop’s university” written john piper, douglas tees, ace henderson , john martland part of musical comedy, “the grate escape,” performed bishop’s choir. tune stuck , has become beloved unofficial song of university. in practice however, second line of second verse changed more vulgar , humorous version.
