in 1991, year before bosnian war began, zenica became headquarters of 1 of first private , independent radio stations in eastern europe, radio cd-cemp. in spring of 1993, zoran mišetić, journalist , owner of radio cd-cemp, granted belgian award independent journalism, known pen of peace.


on 19 april 1993, during croat-bosniak war, 15 civilians killed , 50 others injured, when hvo howitzer grenade landed in central market place of zenica. grenade fired village of puticevo (15 kilometers zenica). total of 6 grenades landed, in rounds of three. 1 round of 2 @ 12.10 pm, 1 round of 2 shells @ 12.24 pm, , further round of 2 shells @ 12.29 pm. during period zenica isolated rest of world year , half. city suffered considerable civilian casualties sniper fire, firefights , hunger. bosnia s fourth-largest city had no water or electricity.


during war, demographics of city altered influx of ethnic bosniak refugees other parts of bosnia, while serb population left parts of serb-controlled bosnia. 1 of biggest steel mills in south central europe has been privatized , bears name of mittal steel corp.
