the deaths attracted media attention in week of 7-13 august 2017, when raj babbar , others attributed them liquid oxygen supplier cutting off hospital non-payment state government. however, supplier denied cutoff. supplier of oxygen baba raghav das medical college allegedly stopped providing oxygen due unpaid debt of us$50,000. starting on 10 august 2017, 30 children died within 48 hours: 17 children in neo-natal ward, 5 in aes (acute encephalitis syndrome) ward , 8 in general ward.
