the main altar of cathedral


the cathedral, built in english gothic style, cruciform in shape of latin cross. exterior walls of church built brick , stone, while base , columns made of granite. dimensions 82 m (269 ft) long, 40 m (131 ft) wide , 23.7 m (78 ft) tall, tower @ centre rising 33.7 m (111 ft).


altar of st. joseph

located right of main altar , sanctuary side altar of st. joseph. given cathedral king victor emmanuel ii of italy , donation facilitated joseph mary sala, expatriate living in hong kong nobility of italy. adorned royal coat of arms of house of savoy; conspicuous symbol of italy said have helped cathedral identify italian rather british, , thus, remain untouched throughout japanese occupation of hong kong, kingdom of italy , empire of japan both signatories tripartite pact.

chapel of our lord s passion

located right of cathedral s sacristy side chapel of our lord s passion. given j.j. braga, parishioner portugal, rededicated chinese martyrs after 1997–2002 renovation. chapel chosen out of 4 commemorate then-newly canonised saints because thematically similar, in martyrs gave lives faith, emulating jesus sacrifice save mankind. new stained glass windows installed depicting saints.


crypt

a crypt constructed beneath former chapel of st. anthony in 2009 house remains of former bishops of hong kong. consists of 2 vicar apostolics, timoleon raimondi , dominic pozzoni, , 5 deceased bishops—enrico valtorta, lorenzo bianchi, francis hsu, peter lei , john wu. bianchi s remains interred later others due fact buried in milan. thus, diocese had apply permission allow of remains transported hong kong; request granted.


the inspiration crypt came design of traditional chinese family house, contain remains of ancestors. bishop @ time, joseph cardinal zen, felt crypt symbolic move inherit teachings of previous generations in order inspire future ones. because cathedral grade historic building, prior approval had obtained buildings department before construction work carried out.
