culture

nearly 100% of students live on campus in residence halls , townhouses. there on 40 student organizations. there no fraternities or sororities. other activities include saint michael s fire , rescue student volunteer first responders, student association, wilderness program, campus ministry, campus radio station wvtx, club sports, student musical , play productions, saint michael s chorale, vermont gregorian chant schola, open mic nights , various instrumental , vocal ensembles. christmas , spring semi-formal dances held. athletics facilities include fitness room, racquetball , indoor track , swimming pool. trails surround campus cross-country running or mountain biking.

there 21 varsity sports (10 men, 11 women) , on 20 intramural teams. saint michael s varsity sports teams called purple knights. school colors purple , gold. varsity teams participate in ncaa s division ii northeast ten conference. approximately 25% of students participate in varsity sport. men: basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, hockey, lacrosse, skiing (alpine, nordic), soccer, rugby, swimming , diving, , tennis. women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, rugby, softball, swimming , diving, tennis, ice hockey, , volleyball. student-led programs include billiards, ping pong, floor hockey, volleyball , indoor soccer. tournaments scheduled throughout academic year. yoga, jazzercise, kick boxing, cardio step , pilates courses offered weekly. first aid , cpr training/certification offered.

notable artists such o.a.r., train (band), roots, jurassic 5, carbon leaf, wyclef jean, lupe fiasco, third eye blind, grace potter , nocturnals, macklemore, , foster people have performed on campus in recent years.

one of extracurricular activities @ saint michael s fire , rescue program. entirely student-run, department provides fire protection , emergency medical treatment campus , surrounding community. emt program 1 of 7 college-run emt programs full service area in country. fire program 1 of entirely volunteer student-run departments in nation. students fulfill civic duties , once-in-a-lifetime experiences smfr.

saint michael s playhouse, college s professional equity summer theater, draws talent broadway, off-broadway , regional theaters performing full scale new york caliber theater. playhouse member of council of resident stock theaters (corst). corst theater company, saint michael s playhouse employs members of actors equity association, directors stage directors , choreographers society , designers united scenic artists.


the playhouse maintains professional theater internship program college theater students. acceptance program competitive. successful candidates work side side professionals in areas of theater production , administration.


the college provides student access saint michael s-sponsored culture pass flynn center performing arts enables free entry world-class arts events in prime burlington-area arts venue throughout academic year.


the college sponsor of vermont mozart festival, formerly state s largest classical music festival.


clubs , organizations

saint michael s offers on 40 different student-run clubs , organizations. clubs range arts (e.g. cappella groups, drama club, chorale) community groups (e.g. common ground, food justice, student global aids campaign) academic clubs (e.g. defender, french club, onion river review).


the campus offers various club sports such cycling, dance, rugby (men s , women s), ski & snowboarding, ultimate frisbee, , water polo.


turtle underground student-run program promotes student art, music, , performance. there shows on saturdays during semester. these have featured variety of acts, ranging djs solo singer-song writers jam bands.


student publications include defender , weekly newspaper, , onion river review, literary magazine.


volunteer efforts

move (mobilization of volunteer efforts) service organization on campus. on 65 students lead move programs locally, domestically, , internationally under guidance of programs director , assistant director. move has highest participation rate of organization on campus on 70% of students volunteering program time graduate. in 2011, 560 move volunteers accounted 28,000 service hours. move offers students opportunity involved in number of programs ranging mentoring middle school students, working habitat humanity, volunteering @ local shelter. unique service move program provides extended service program. since 1986, saint michael s extended service program has offered students alternative way spend breaks during , @ end of academic year. began 1 trip new york city s covenant house, has expanded service trips 11 domestic , 2 international sites in areas close school hartford, ct , far kolkata, india. each year more 125 students, faculty, , staff participate in extended service program.


adventure sports center

the adventure sports center (asc) @ saint michael s college allows students active , take advantage of new england wilderness. asc, students @ skill level can go hiking, rock climbing, ice climbing, snowshoeing, kayaking , skiing little $5. asc offers $65 season pass smugglers notch vans shuttle students mountain every weekend. during summer, put on wilderness orientation weekend (wow) incoming first-year students. three-day field intensive program allows incoming students experience beautiful vermont wilderness areas , meet future classmates before moving in.
