with advent of small-size banknotes came significant design changes types of paper currency including national bank notes. result of changes, each denomination had same portrait and, except minor variations, same decorative features characterize types of united states currency late 1920s 1990s. elaborate rendition of bank s name omitted engraved design, over-stamped in black ink, above engraved lettering of promise-to-pay. similarly, issuing bank s charter number omitted engraved border, , overprinted in dark ink.
small size national bank notes similar to, distinctly different from, emergency 1933 issue of federal reserve bank notes. these printed using national bank note plates slight design changes. both national currency , have different issuers.
