gibbon promoted command 2nd division, corps @ battle of fredericksburg, wounded. wound minor kept getting infected, gibbon out of action few months. shortly after returning duty learned of sudden death of son, john gibbon, jr. gibbon returned battle of chancellorsville, division in reserve , saw little action. @ battle of gettysburg, commanded 2nd division, ii corps , temporarily commanded corps on july 2 , july 3, 1863, while maj. gen. winfield scott hancock elevated command larger units. @ end of council of war on night of july 2, army commander maj. gen. george meade took gibbon aside , predicted, if lee attacks tomorrow, on front. , division did bear brunt of fighting during defense against pickett s charge on july 3, when gibbon again wounded. while recovering wounds, commanded draft depot in cleveland, ohio, , attended dedication of soldiers national cemetery , heard abraham lincoln s gettysburg address close friend , aide lt. frank a. haskell.


gibbon in command of 2nd division @ battles of wilderness, spotsylvania court house, , cold harbor. on june 7, 1864, promoted major general of volunteers. during siege of petersburg, gibbon became disheartened when troops refused fight @ ream s station. briefly commanded xviii corps before going on sick leave, service being valuable, returned command newly created xxiv corps in army of james. troops helped achieve decisive breakthrough @ petersburg, capturing fort gregg, part of confederate defenses. led troops during appomattox campaign , blocked confederate escape route @ battle of appomattox courthouse. 1 of 3 commissioners confederate surrender.
