Formation and growth of the SSP History of the Scottish Socialist Party



in april 1999 ssp announced manifesto first elections devolved scottish parliament. despite having party membership of around 1,200 ssp contested regions, party s national convenor tommy sheridan top-placed on glasgow regional list. sheridan elected, becoming first msp.


the period following election of scotland s socialist msp saw sustained growth ssp. during period of sustained , rapid growth, recruited extensively former members of labour party , scottish national party, in addition trade unionists, environmentalists, , community campaigners. achieved was, minor party, respectable vote @ united kingdom general election, 2001 , series of by-elections uk , scottish parliaments (hamilton south, ayr, glasgow anniesland, , falkirk west).

the 2003 elections scottish parliament took place shortly after decision of uk parliament invade iraq , uk firefighter dispute 2002–2003. ssp had been active in anti-war movement , firefighters dispute, , fielded candidates in seats.they gained 5 additional regional list msps across scotland: frances curran; rosie kane; carolyn leckie; colin fox; , rosemary byrne.


the party had boost when scottish section of national union of rail, maritime , transport workers (rmt) affiliated them, breaking historical association labour.


campbell martin, former snp msp had become independent, came close joining ssp. party did, however, recruit john mcallion, former labour msp lost seat @ 2003 election. stood ssp in dunfermline , west fife by-election, 2006, gained 537 votes (1.6%).
