u-56 s first 3 patrols, completed during workup , training period, relatively uneventful cruises in north sea. no ships attacked during period; though on third sortie, circumnavigated shetland islands.
4th patrol
the submarine s luck changed better on fourth foray. damaged eskdene on 2 december 1939, 70 nautical miles (130 km; 81 mi) northeast of tyne. following day, sank rudolf 40 nautical miles (74 km; 46 mi) east of may island (in mouth of firth of forth).
5th, 6th, 7th, 8th , 9th patrols
the fifth patrol uneventful , took boat southern north sea.
patrol numbers 6 , 7 both more of same.
the boat s eighth sortie ranged far , wide; across north sea scottish west coast, north of shetland, other side of north sea coast of norway, further success continued elude her.
her ninth effort north of hebrides , again round shetland islands.
10th patrol
u-56 s tenth patrol took newly captured port of lorient on french atlantic coast. departed wilhelmshaven on 29 june 1940; route west of ireland, culminating in arrival on 21 july.
11th patrol
she near ireland once more when sank boma on 5 august 1940 northwest of malin head.
in similar location, sank armed merchant cruiser hms transylvania 40 nautical miles (74 km; 46 mi) northwest of malin head on 10 august.
12th patrol
u-56 attacked british submarine hms tribune 15 nautical miles (28 km; 17 mi) northeast of st kilda on 6 september. torpedoes missed; germans unaware of situation. boat on way, via gap between faroe , shetland islands, germany. arrived in kiel on 15 september.
