the stump , socket method can cause significant pain in amputee, why direct bone attachment has been explored extensively. method works inserting titanium bolt bone @ end of stump. after several months bone attaches titanium bolt , abutment attached titanium bolt. abutment extends out of stump , (removable) artificial limb attached abutment. of benefits of method include following:



better muscle control of prosthetic.
the ability wear prosthetic extended period of time; stump , socket method not possible.
the ability transfemoral amputees drive car.

the main disadvantage of method amputees direct bone attachment cannot have large impacts on limb, such experienced during jogging, because of potential bone break.
