currently medieval walls stand @ 15 feet (4.6 meters) in height , 3 entrances of of fortification towers preserved in one-third of original length of city walls. castle reinforced several guard towers republic of venice , during period of rule in albania ottoman empire wall reinforced.


on 7 april 1939, albanian patriots fought italian invasion of albania. in durrës, force of 360 albanians, gendarmes , townspeople, led abaz kupi, commander of gendarmerie in durrës, , mujo ulqinaku, marine official, tried halt italian advance. armed small arms , 3 machine guns, succeeded in keeping italians @ bay several hours until large number of light tanks disembarked latter s naval vessels. after that, resistance diminished , within 5 hours italian forces had captured entire city.


today castle popular tourist attraction.
