over years, kiwi has been owned variety of corporations. first 6 decades of existence, part of iterations of australian corporation kiwi in name, based in state of victoria, including kiwi boot polish co. (1913–1916) , kiwi polish co. (1916–1971). company joined nicholas international ltd., melbourne-based pharmaceutical company producing international brands such aspro , rennie. new company renamed nicholas kiwi. in 1984, acquired american-based sara lee, @ time known consolidated foods corporation, sold off nicholas pharmaceutical products roche of switzerland , kept kiwi range.


kiwi acquired sara lee following purchase of reckitt & colman in 1991 , knomark in 1987. federal trade commission ruled sara lee had divest ownership of these companies in 1994 prevent becoming monopoly. since ruling, sara lee has been prevented acquiring further assets or firms associated chemical shoe care products in united states without prior commission approval. competition commission in united kingdom investigated potential monopoly of sara lee in shoe care industry. on april 4, 2011, sara lee announced had completed sale of global shoe care business, in majority of countries, s. c. johnson.


kiwi remains predominant shoe polish brand in of world, being sold in on 180 countries , holding 53% market share worldwide. world war led enormous demand kiwi polish use australian, british and, later, american forces. today, manufactured in australia, canada, honduras, france, india, indonesia, pakistan, peru, south africa, spain, united kingdom, , united states. other leading brands include shinola, lincoln shoe polish, meltonian, , cherry blossom.
