in july 1865 american championships took place in poughkeepsie, new york. crowd of more 20,000 lined riverbanks, , more 10,000 people wagered estimated $100,000 on race. trouble started when biglin brothers’ 4 man team (consisting of brothers , dennis leary) defeated local crew consisting of william stevens, homer wooden, william burger, , ezekiel beneway. losing boat protested cut off @ finish. referee , judges rushed poughkeepsie hotel rule on race. officials gave race biglin brothers, , barely escaped lives. because of results city descended riot fights between broke out between supporters of rival crews. detectives new york city brought in keep peace had little impact.
