gibbon stayed in army after war. reverted regular army rank of colonel , in command of 7th infantry @ of montana column consisting of f,g,h,l of 2nd cavalry under jams s. brisbane fort ellis , of own regiment of 7th infantry stationed @ shaw, baker , ellis in montana territory, during campaign against sioux in 1876. gibbon, general george crook, , general alfred terry make coordinated campaign against sioux , cheyenne, crook driven @ battle of rosebud, , gibbon not close when lt. col. george armstrong custer attacked large village on banks of little bighorn river. battle of little bighorn resulted in deaths of custer , 261 of men. gibbon s approach on june 26 saved lives of several hundred men under command of major marcus reno still under siege. gibbon arrived next day , helped bury dead , evacuate wounded.


gibbon still in command in montana following year when received telegraph general oliver otis howard cut off nez percé had left idaho, pursued howard. (see nez perce war) gibbon found nez perce near big hole river in western montana. @ battle of big hole gibbon s forces inflicted , suffered heavy casualties, , gibbon became pinned down indian sniper fire. nez perce withdrew in order after second day of battle. in response gibbon s urgent call help, general howard , advance party arrived next day @ battlefield. gibbon, because of casualties , wound suffered, unable continue pursuit of nez perce.
