Sea trial results USCGC Matagorda (WPB-1303)
uscgc matagorda (wpb-1303), first 110-foot cutter converted 123 feet, @ integrated support command new orleans, louisiana, on 27 march 2004. matagorda made brief stop in new orleans on way home port in key west, florida.
the refit added 15 tons vessel s displacement, , reduced maximum speed approximately 1 knot. added length , weight caused unexpected flexing on ships decks, causing cracks. @ least 1 cutter had warping severe; engines no longer seated, while ship s fuel tanks deformed point of leakage. problem these cutters faced after intended improvement steering. steering system mangled badly, had problems maintaining course, @ speeds slower ten knots. propeller shaft design flawed also, growing steadily misaligned engines once cracking of hulls began. maritime waste disposal systems damaged point of being below specification. there poor welding , sloppy workmanship throughout ships attributed failing of these vessel hulls. communications system complete fiasco too, barely functional , unsecure. of work done bollinger deepwater system program done insufficiently , contributed failing of these ships.
