the cap convex before becoming broadly convex flattened in age, , attains diameter of 3–9.5 cm (1.2–3.7 in). cap surface dry, and, in young individuals, has powdery coating stain hands yellow if handled. later, cap becomes tomentose (hairy), , develops small cracks. cap color bright orange-yellow, mixed olive tints. flesh white cream, , not bruise blue when injured or exposed air cutting. odor not distinctive, , taste either not distinctive or acidic. pore surface yellow yellow orange, becoming olive-yellow greenish yellow in age, developing bright crimson crimson-orange tints. tube attachment stem adnate subdecurrent (running down length of stem) , depressed near stem @ maturity. pores angular, radially elongated near stem, , typically more 1 mm wide in maturity. tubes 1.5 cm (0.6 in) deep. stem 5–9 cm (2.0–3.5 in) long, 5–12 mm (0.20–0.47 in) thick, , either equal in width throughout or enlarged in either end. stem surface reticulate @ least on upper portion of mature specimens, although characteristic less pronounced or absent in young indivisuals. mycelium @ base of stem white. stem has neither partial veil nor annulus. boletus auriflammeus produces olive-brown ochre-brown spore print. not known if fruit bodies edible.

boletus aurantiosplendens similar in appearance p. auriflammeus, several features of former species can distinguish latter: orange brownish-orange or brownish-yellow cap; yellow apricot or orange stem tawny reddish-brown streaks not stain fingers when handled; yellow flesh darkens when exposed or injured; ventricose or ventricose-rostrate (swollen in middle narrow tip) cheilocystidia , pleurocystidia; , hyphae in cap cuticle lack bright yellow encrusted crystals. b. roxanae lookalike, less bright coloring, brownish tones on cap, , no reticulation on stem. retiboletus ornatipes has more robust stature , not have orange tones on stem.
