the founders of d agostino supermarkets, brothers pasquale , nicholas d agostino sr., emigrated mountain village of bugnara, italy, arriving separately in new york city teenagers in 1920s. due poverty, skipped high school , instead furthered education assisting merchants including father s fruit-and-vegetable pushcart business.


in 1932, brothers bought small shop on manhattan s upper east side, prosperous neighborhood afford quality groceries during great depression. in 1939, store moved larger quarters nearby; brothers named yorkville food shoppe , added meat department. in key innovation, gave people opportunity shop meat, produce, dairy , baked goods in single store, helping pioneer , popularize idea of supermarket . d agostino s flourished in post-wwii economic boom , opened large store in 1950, on 20th street alongside stuyvesant town – peter cooper village.


pasquale died in 1960 , nicholas bought out share of business, serve ceo, chairman , president, , resolve family succession issue. @ time, there 8 d agostino stores on manhattan s east side. reputation quality meats, d agostino s ran popular ads in 1960s teased, please don t kiss butcher. nicholas d agostino relinquished daily management sons, stephen , nicholas jr., in 1964. nicholas sr. continuing chairman, stephen became president , ceo in 1972, , nicholas jr. succeeded him in 1982.
