when sick , exhausted armenians had survived death marches in deir ez-zor (syria) arrived in beirut after collapse of ottoman empire, given right construct shacks on eastern banks of beirut river @ time swamps , marshy lands. allowed erect houses , buildings stand day. in 1952, bourj hammoud became independent municipality , member of metn-north group of municipalities.


the founding father of bourj hammoud , municipality armenian catholic father paul ariss (in arabic الأب بول عريس; in armenian Հայր Պօղոս Արիս) instrumental in laying foundations of bustling city , center lebanese armenian community , served long time mayor. municipality named main street in bourj hammoud in name in acknowledgement of sizable contributions establishment , development of city.


during founding , settlement, bourj hammoud focus of rivalry between 2 armenian political parties, armenian revolutionary federation , social democrat hunchakian party, struggled control newly established shanty-town. led various altercations , assassinations gripped armenian community of lebanon. climaxed during lebanon crisis of 1958, around time 2 parties , supporters became polarized due religious dispute on catholicos leader of armenian apostolic church. however, in midst of increasing sectarian strife in late 1960s , 1970s, lebanon s armenian community began close ranks, , in 1972, hunchakian party ran joint ticket dashnaks.

the lebanese civil war threatened existence of beirut s armenian community. armenians felt need stick close each other during turbulent times, thus, assembled in bourj hammoud. armenian presence evident in bourj hammoud multiple armenian community centers , churches.


during lebanese civil war, many young armenians took arms defend opposing forces. however, armenian revolutionary federation, armenian political party representing armenians in diaspora, tried best remain neutral. because of armenian policy of neutrality, maronite militia groups kept inhabitants of bourj hammoud under strong pressure, attacking quarter of bourj hammoud.


2006 israel-lebanon conflict

during 2006 israel-lebanon conflict, refugees welcomed bourj hammoud s churches, schools , other complexes fed , given shelters. after conflict, turkey proposed send of troops lebanon part of unifil. armenians opposed turkish involvement. held demonstrations against turkish force in bourj hammoud.
